As you leave behind the comforts of Ribble Valley Retreat, prepare for a journey filled with stunning sights and delightful encounters. Your exciting day ahead begins with a brief yet picturesque train ride from the station directly opposite the entrance.


Discovering Clitheroe Castle


Begin your journey at Clitheroe Castle, a historic site originating from the 12th century. Situated on a hill, the castle provides panoramic views of the Ribble Valley. Explore the on-site museum to learn about the town's rich history, or enjoy the breathtaking views from the top, including the impressive Pendle Hill in the background. It's possibly the finest spot to admire the home of the notorious Pendle Witches. The castle grounds offer a lovely area for a stroll and feature a wonderful free playground for children.

Browse Boutique Shops and Visit Holmes Mill


On route to Holmes Mill you will pass a great selection of independent shops and café bars. So grab that perfect gift or treat yourself to a souvenir. Candles, soaps and gin are just a few of our local specialties. Its only a short walk but you might be tempted to stop for coffee on route to Holmes Mill, where you will find fresh pastries and other artisan delights on arrival.

The Food Hall at Holmes Mill

Visit the deli counter at the impressive Food Hall at Holmes Mill. Here you will find an array of local meats and cheeses. Perhaps grab yourself some chutneys and freshly baked bread for a perfect feast back at the camp later.

Before heading off, you can visit the Beer Hall to watch them brewing the local Bowland beer. Sample cask beers in this flagship tasting parlour, whilst admiring the wonderfully preserved cotton mill.


An Afternoon in the Quintessential Village of Whalley


As lunch approaches, you can head back (in the direction of the retreat) with a 5 minute rail journey to the delightful village of Whalley. Known for its quaint cafes and restaurants, this charming spot offers a culinary experience to remember with a great choice of independent offerings, including a dine-in ice cream parlour.


After lunch, stroll through Whalley’s historic streets. Taking time to browse unique boutiques and artisanal shops on the way to Whalley Abbey. A beautiful place to stroll and admire the stunning gardens, river views and 14th century history.


No trip to Whalley is complete without a quick stop at Whalley Wine Bar. Select your perfect tipple with expert help of their knowledgeable staff. Be sure to visit their shop next door so you can take your favourite finding home to enjoy that evening at sunset.



Unwinding at Ribble Valley Retreat


As the day comes to a close, return to Ribble Valley Retreat. Take a moment to unwind and reflect on the wonderful experiences you enjoyed.
